How The Overhaul Brief Sources and Verifies Fire Service Tech News
Every story links to primary sources. No aggregation without attribution. Here's how we work.
What The Overhaul Brief Covers
The Overhaul Brief covers fire service technology innovation across five core categories: AI in firefighting, wildfire detection and suppression technology, firefighter health and safety tools, fire service robotics, and fire department operations.
Published every Tuesday, each issue includes 5-7 curated stories selected for relevance to firefighters, fire chiefs, and training officers. Every issue also features a Tool Spotlight highlighting verified fire service tools with real-world use cases.
Sourcing Standards
- Every story links to primary source. Press releases, research papers, government reports, trade publications, or manufacturer announcements. No aggregation without attribution.
- "The take:" analysis sections separate fact from expert opinion. Factual reporting appears in the main story body. Analysis, expert opinion, and context appear in "The take:" boxes.
- No sponsored content. The Overhaul Brief does not accept payment for story placement, product mentions, or editorial coverage.
- Tool Spotlight features only tools with verified use cases. Tools featured in the weekly spotlight must have documented adoption by fire departments, verified through department press releases, product case studies, or direct confirmation.
Verification Process
Before publication, every story passes through a multi-step verification process:
- Cross-reference manufacturer claims with certification registries. When a product claims NIOSH approval, FAA drone certification, or NFPA standards compliance, we verify against NIOSH NPPTL database, FAA UAS registry, or NFPA published standards.
- Verify expert credentials. Expert quotes and commentary are verified via LinkedIn professional profiles, fire department rosters, or state professional licensing databases.
- Confirm incident data via official sources. Fire incident statistics, firefighter injury reports, and line-of-duty death data are confirmed via NFIRS (National Fire Incident Reporting System), NIOSH FFFIPP (Firefighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program), or official department press releases.
- Check regulatory compliance. Product safety claims, environmental compliance, and workplace hazard reporting are verified against OSHA regulations, EPA databases, and CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) records.
